Shopping and God Speed Dearest Nigel Benjamin
I spent a large part of the day with a lady from church I didn't know very well. Shopping, tequila and tacos, lots of talk including finding out we had some very similar paths in life. I love it when I find someone I have a strong connection to. A new friend and her daughter!
Once I got home with my ten zillion bags (seriously, I was buying the last things for the guest house) I was busy putting everything away when I got word that another good friend had passed away. Musician Nigel Benjamin.
I hadn't heard from Nig in the last few weeks. But that's not unusual, a month or two could pass before I got a phone call from Super Nig. We'd talk and laugh, sometimes there would be discussions of a serious nature. He would call me up to tell me the latest doings of his crazier neighbors, including some former Manson family members.
Nigel and I shared a abiding hatred of our dear president and shared dislike for Ted Nugent. That was one of the first conversions we had, talking about what a self-deluded arrogant asshat Nugent is. We told each other our story of Nugent and laughed. I told him my Gene Simmons story and what happened with the Runaways and my ex.
The very last time I talked to Nigel he was upset by his mention and portrayal of him in the new Motley Crue movie 'The Dirt' I had to point out if you punch someone in the face on stage they are likely to call you an asshole on film.
I'd known him for quite some time, going back years from the time I friended him ten years ago on Facebook and pmed him to tell him how influential the album "Mott" had been to me when I was 14 years old and undergoing chemo therapy and radiation. I must have worn that record out I played it so often. We started talking and the friendship grew from there, moving to phone calls quickly.
One quick meeting when I was in California on business. He was one of those people like the lady today that you just clicked with instantly. We thought the same way on some many things.
Nigel had lots of resentment and anger, and you know me, I'm a sucker for the underdog, for those that society sometimes dubs unlovable.
He was the guy who just missed it, joining Mott the Hoople when it devolved into Mott. Playing with Mick Mars and Nikki Sixx just before they formed Motley Crue. The guy who should have been a rock star with a great voice, who missed by just that much.
A highly moral man, even if he didn't believe in the classic notion of God.
Nigel, you still owe me that CD! I'll miss you, your laughter, your crazy stories about
'that Firkin woman' and so much more. Whoever will I bitch to now about musical snafus in what I am doing now?
