Ripe Bananas and Raving Idiots

This morning I had quite a shock. One of my newer Facebook local friends when on a rant against overweight people. Or as he called them 'Lazy Fatties'

This dude works at one of the two gyms in Tamarindo. It was a screed name calling, shaming and blaming anyone without a perfect body. Ugly words ending with an appeal to get off your flabby, lazy, fat ass and start working out there.

This is the problem with gyms, serious gyms. The judgement. If you really were fat would being talked about like that make you go to the gym, or would it send you face first into a pile of Penguino chocolate cup cakes?  The years I worked out at Powell Wellness Center I got to see people of all ages, shapes and weights doing what they could in an environment where it didn't matter. As it shouldn't matter. We all have different needs and abilities.

About six months ago I was with Jim when he went to check out one of the other gyms in Tamarindo. He'd been working out at the gym I'm talking about saying this stuff for some months and his trainer said Jim needed to diet down first before hitting their gym. Whoever heard of being forced to lose weight before you workout?

The other gym was rather disorganized, we witnessed the owner and the trainers fighting and Jim talked to the other clients. It was all Crossfit and Keto dieting. But what struck me the most was how most of the people there were like cult members, a cult that focused entirely upon outward appearances. On the body. The body is their idol.

That isn't any more emotionally healthy than worshiping celebrity pastors, or the Bible, or certain foods, or anything else you can make an idol of.

That particular gym ended up closing in a rancorous cacophony of blaming.

The older I get the most I see the value of moderation in all things. Even the gym or working out. I know a body builder guy here and he's recently shared with Jim all the surgeries he has had to have as a result of his quest for the perfect body. It's a long list of terrible injuries. Plus he just looks weird. But I've never found those big bulgy muscles of body builder to be attractive at all. This dude is so top heavy it's affected how he walks, like a sidling crab trying to leverage up all those muscles.

Jim and I swim daily, fifty lengths in the pool and I think that is plenty of working out.

The issue for me is the asthma, and for Jim his shoulder surgery. We've both reduced to walking around the pool for those lengths right now.

One bit of weird news today. I discovered I am suddenly allergic to bananas of all things.
