Sleepy Worried
A cloudy sunset over Playa Grande. Jim just left to go check on our friend who lives right on Grande. Cannot find out if he's alright. Phone going straight voice mail.
Was up most of the night last night. Grande is little over a mile away and we did get a few high flying sparks coming down very late last night. I was up, watching to make sure that orange glow got no closer to our house. I'm a worry wart. Jim slept. I knew it wasn't likely to come this way because the winds were blowing the other way, and there's that big wetlands between us and them. But still I worry.
Well, he slept right up until the earthquake hit and then the aftershocks.
Not a lot of sleeping happened last night. I'm dragging right now. But no napping. Our friend going back to the States came by to drop off his car. His parting shot was that the car needed a ton of work to pass Retieve (inspection) and there was zero insurance on it. If we wreck it it's up to us to pay damages. Personally I think that's a shitty thing to do, ask us to drive his car occasionally to keep it running, but with a soon to expire safety sticker and no insurance. Jim and I are going to have to have a conversation about that later. I think we just need to park it, start it up every now and then but do not drive it.
The interesting thing about living here is that those Americans here who are not zillionaires seem to have their own unique quirks more than the general population in the States. There's the guy who's house burned last night who surfers every single day, yet consumes Fox News like it's his job. There's our friend going home, who does not realize that no one will have anything to do with him at church because of his arrest record, who seems to skirt around the edges of legal as a retired lawyer. He's also a client at the house of ill repute here. There's the gal I know that lost custody of her teenaged son for drinking and partying too much who's scammed everyone for miles around for loans she never repays. There's a guy that runs a fancy publication that caters to the rich woo-woo alternative medicine crowd who glosses over anything imperfect here. He's relentlessly too positive. The rich former punk rocker, the lady who has starred on Broadway and in tv, the guy that's the Canadian Prime Minister who lives above us in the hills. All kinds from all walks of life with one thing in common, independence mixed with a certain 'can do' and slightly off normal. Me too. I fit in that description too.
I tried to becalm myself with a little binging of Netflix last night. I finally broke down and watched most of "Tiger King" I abhor all the animal abuse clearly going in all of these people and places it was a good distraction. What's up with Carol Baskin's constant nervous laugh? It gave me the willies. Joe Exotic needs to be in jail a lot longer than what they sentenced him too. Not one redeeming sympathetic person in the entire cast.
I did get quite the laugh out of Carol's husband she is believed to have murdered wanting to move to Bagaces, Costa Rica. It's not far from here, maybe an hour, just south of Liberia. We got there to swim in the Llanos de Cortes waterfalls on very hot days. It's a rather rural area off Rutas 1 the Pan-American Highway.
Here's a photo of the waterfalls. I didn't take it, just like I have zero photos on the times we go to the hot springs in Arenal. I don't bring my IPhone or camera anywhere near water after killing two phones and one camera here. This is a very easy hike off the road, like ten minutes, and easy to find.
He was planning on opening a Tiger zoo in place where that is so super illegal I cannot even begin to explain. The rules on animals here are so so stringent. To the point where we have signs everywhere telling you that the iguanas, monkeys and coatimundis have the right of way. You can be fined just for running one over. Animals have strong protections here and zoos are banned. It would not have gone well for him here.
