Costa Rica COVID Day 8 Perhaps?

I'm going to be blogging what's going on here with the new COVID 19 virus here in Costa Rica. I've been self isolating all week with a few exceptions because I take immunio suppression therapy. I am watching and waiting. It's been very odd here. While my medical people, like my doctor, and the government seem to be taking this seriously, but not so much with the people.

Right now there are approximately 35 people confirmed to have the virus. I think the numbers are likely much much higher due to the stories I keep hearing of Ticos being told they cannot get the test and that it's not appropriate for them to be tested even while they have all the symptoms. I think the culture of Costa Rica, a culture of do the least and slide on by is going to make this hideously bad here.

Today the government's response is to order all discos and bars closed. Restaurants are allowed to be open, along with all other businesses. The order comes after it was found that bars are the biggest offenders of the 50% occupancy rules put into place last week, meaning that every business can only operate with half the capacity, half the people allowed in. No one is paying any attention to this rule. I got to see that clearly this morning at the Maxi Pali in Tamarindo.

I went early on, planning on going right after opening so I could get a couple of loaves of bread and extra eggs, skin cream for my asthmatic dermatitis. Went with anti bacterial wipes for the cart. I carry nitrile gloves and my Vog mask if it's crazy crowded. The mask is especially important for me because I frequently run across people wearing colognes, or cleaning something, or smoking that will hard trigger my asthma. The mask is easy on if I run across someone provoking the asthma.

8 Am - No soap, no bleach, no toilet paper, not much cleaning supplies, many empty shelves. Granted the store was filled with workers restocking all of these shelves, but the store was also filled with people shopping, clearly near if not over the 50% capacity.

Got the last couple of loaves of whole wheat bread and one of the last packs of flour tortillas. On the way out of the store there were four lurking American tourists, complaining about places being closed, and things being out at the store. Who comes to a tourist spot during a worldwide pandemic? Very stupid Americans.

Most of the area churches operated today simply as streaming service run by one or a handful of people through Facebook Live and other streaming services. The churches in the area have finally started taking it seriously. Two weeks ago many were still scoffing that this was fear-mongering media driven happening. By last weekend the government had to issue a warning that you could not hug, handshake or pass the kiss of peace in church, but still some were still scoffing and declaring it fake. Not now.

I'll keep updating this as I hear or see what's happening. Tomorrow I will be wearing my mask all day. I must go to the bank to buy a CD, and I must get my yearly lung tests.

Keep washing your hands friends, and stay away from others if you can.

I am staying at home, with my Price Smart horded supplies, and making crocheted bedroom rugs.

Found this on Facebook, but the numbers listed are all off, so I am thinking this is the typical Tico understatement and tendency to never say anything that pisses anyone off.
